Students Out and About

MBA students recently made two visits into the community to get a better understanding of how certain organizations work, communicate, and network in the Roanoke region.
The first visit was to the Elizabeth Arden plant where students were given a tour of logistical operations. The students received a two hour briefing from Elizabeth Arden divisions such as marketing, customer service, accounting, human resources, operations, engineering, and information technology. Students were afforded an opportunity to analyze the success of how these various divisions work together for the greater good of the organization.
Next, students visited the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) facility in Roanoke to compare and contrast a government entity to a for-profit business. At the FAA, students listened to managers and air traffic controllers explain the strategy and policies of the FAA. Students toured the tower, the information technology base and the radar room of the facility.
Because of the on-site visits, the MBA students have a better appreciation for the similarities and differences of government and private organizations. One student said, “Going out and about is a useful and interesting way to see textbook theories come alive in the real world.”
