The first Southside Virginia campus of National College began serving Patrick and Henry Counties in 1978, and quickly built a reputation among students seeking new careers in the fields of management, computers, accounting, and health care.
On March 24, 2008 the campus began holding classes in a new campus facility at 905 North Memorial Boulevard. The $2.3 million renovation of this new facility will provide additional classroom space, support new programs, and offer greater convenience to students.

Best Person for the Job

Smiling ear to ear, Marie Edwards stopped by the Martinsville Campus career center recently to share her excitement about her new career. She was recently hired as a medical assistant at Chan M. Park Family Practice in Ridgeway, Virginia.
A May 2010 medical assisting graduate, Marie says that she has been on cloud nine since starting her new career, and she says it has been a big boost for her self-confidence. Marie is usually more quiet and a little on the timid side, but her newfound confidence is obvious because she can’t stop smiling.
Marie entered National College because she was tired of working in factories, fast-food, and as a personal care aide. She felt like she was not making a difference and she knew she was not challenging herself enough with the jobs that she had. She began her National experience in the pharmacy technician program and graduated in May 2008. Wanting to further her education and find a career that would be more hands-on, medical assisting seemed like a perfect fit for her long-term career goals. Plus, she has a very caring and helpful nature, and she felt like she could make more of a difference in someone’s life.
Marie is grateful for many things from her National experience, but she is especially grateful for her medical assisting externship and the help that she received from the career center. Her externship taught her how to triage patients, draw blood, and how to prepare patients for procedures – all things that she has do in her new job. She feels like her externship really prepared her. Had it not been for the career center, though, she may not have received the job. The lead was called into the career center, and Career Center Director Jill Jones submitted Marie’s résumé for the position. Marie was interviewed along with other candidates, and from the initial interviews, she was then selected to participate in a trial period. Throughout the trial period, she was able to demonstrate her skills, professionalism, willingness to learn, and overall pleasant personality. Needless to say, she was able to prove herself as the best person for the job. Now with a new career, she feels like she is living a new and more fulfilled life.
