Preparing for the job market

On April 7th and 8th, two representatives of local IT recruiting companies shared their knowledge and expertise with Knoxville students in the information technology programs.
Erika Addinton, Recruiting Manager for USA Catalyst, and Glan Zahn, President of RecruitWise, talked about the importance of representing one’s self in the resume with appropriate information that meets the needs of the employer/recruiter. They explained the importance of listing skills pertinent to the job. During the presentation, students learned that employers are looking for a consistent work history, assertive attitudes, punctuality, appropriate dress, and to make sure the conversation in the interview stays professional. The guest speakers also stressed the importance of being able to identify individual strengths and weaknesses.
Following the presentation, students participated in mock interviews to practice selling themselves to potential employers. Student Sam Brock (pictured) said he learned a lot about what not to say in an interview and Vickie White said, “Practicing interviewing makes it a little less scary.”
