Career Presentation

Students in Instructor Steve Gant’s pharmacy practice class had the privilege of having guest speaker Bill Jones, a Doctor of Pharmacy student and intern at Pharmerica, talk about pharmacy law and what it takes to become a pharmacist. He specifically addressed the changes that have occurred in pharmacy with the addition of minute clinics and the like where pharmacists can now give immunizations. In some facilities, pharmacy technicians are also allowed to give immunizations. Mr. Jones also explained that in some cases the pharmacist has become an advisor to customers about insurance and what health care procedures and medications are and are not covered. This can help a client determine which insurance program is the best choice for their needs.
Student Christian Brown indicated that as a result of Mr. Jones’ presentation, she is seriously considering attending pharmacy school when she completes her pharmacy technician program. Student Davianne Landers also found the presentation helpful. She asked why some medications are now over the counter that used to be prescription only. She also asked Mr. Jones to provide more information about the steps one needs to go through to become a pharmacist. Mr. Jones was very impressed by the types of questions the students asked and how attentive they were to the material presented.
