Busy Medical Assistants in Training

Students in the medical assisting programs at the Harrisonburg Campus have been very busy during this fall term. On September 22nd, the department coordinated the campus's most recent blood drive through Virginia Blood Services. Students provided support and assistance for this event and helped to secure 26 units of blood, which exceeded the goal of 20 units. Thanks to all who provided this life-giving service.
On October 5, a number of students traveled to Lacy Springs Elementary School to assist school nurse Leelee Breeden (also a faculty member at National) with her vision screening for the children in her school. Medical assisting students got some additional hands-on experience with topics they are studying in class and provided an important community service.
Students who are in the final term of their medical assisting degree program were recently challenged with mock job interviews which were generously conducted by Ms. Jamie Loucks, office manager for Harrisonburg Family Chiropractic, and Mr. Bucky Chisholm, CEO of Hess Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. Students dressed professionally, presented resumes, and interviewed with both professionals. They received helpful feedback and suggestions on how to best present themselves to make their job searches more successful.
The week of October 19-23 is National Medical Assistant Recognition Week. The Campus celebrated and recognized its great program and excellent students by offering refreshments at several scheduled times, exhibits of students' work, health information displays for visitors, and drawings for medical assisting t-shirts and tote bags.
