Recognizing Surgical Technologist

September 20-26 is National Surgical Technologist Week. Students and faculty at the Harrisonburg Campus celebrated the event throughout the week. On Wednesday, September 23, they held a reception for surgical technology students, health care faculty, and National College staff. They also provided an informative display of surgical equipment in the student lounge to raise awareness.

A surgical technology graduate from National College completes 90 hours of surgical observation, plus 420 clinical hours of progressive participation intraoperatively. While standing across from or beside the surgeon and assistant, the surgical technologist is "thinking like the surgeon and serves as an extra pair of professional eyes and ears in the operating room environment."
Preparation for this profession is demanding and comprehensive. As a profession, surgical technology is projected to grow faster than average through the year 2012 as America's healthcare needs increase. The Harrisonburg program is fully accredited, and graduates are eligible to take the Certified Surgical Technologist examination - an important professional credential.
