Externship to Employment
Cheryl Humphries (pictured), Harrisonburg graduate from the Medical Office Specialist and Medical Billing and Coding diploma programs, decided to seek an unpaid externship and get some valuable hands-on experience. After her graduation this spring, she applied for an externship with Hess Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine, a large medical practice in Harrisonburg.
Chief Executive Officer Bucky Chisholm interviewed Cheryl and agreed to allow her to work part-time in several departments. She proved herself to be knowledgeable, well-trained, and dependable: a great employee. It wasn’t long until Chisholm realized Cheryl’s valuable qualities and offered to start paying her as an employee –not an extern. Cheryl is now a medical records assistant for a long-term scanning project. The externship made all the difference!
The Harrisonburg Campus is pleased to have formed a good relationship with Hess Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine and hopes to have more success stories such as this in the future.
