Mock Laparoscopy

On January 23rd, the surgical technology students at the Harrisonburg Campus were invited to Rockingham Memorial Hospital (RMH) for a discussion on laparoscopic procedures. Destiny Washington, an RMH surgical technician, conducted the presentation in an empty operating room. The students were able to manipulate and examine the hospital’s general laparoscopy set. After the presentation, each student independently scrubbed, gowned, and gloved themselves to prepare for a “mock” surgery. The Operating Room Educator Danny Mace fulfilled the role of the surgeon while Destiny acted as the surgical technician. Mr. Mace explained the surgical process of carefully entering the abdomen through a small 2-inch incision in the skin to retrieve a specimen. The “patient” used for this procedure was a laparoscopy abdominal simulator. The simulator mimicked the inflated abdomen of a patient undergoing laparoscopic surgery. The “specimen” included small round candy, rubber bands, and string. The students were able to visualize the inner portions of the abdomen through the laparoscopic camera and light cord provided by the hospital.
