A Speech Challenge

Students at the Dayton Area Campus have extended thoughtful advice to President Obama as he juggles a number of priorities during his first days in office. The campus’ Humanities Department recently conducted its quarterly Speech Challenge with students speaking on the theme “The New President’s Top Priority Should Be…”
Students offered their perspective on a number of issues currently buzzing about the White House and Congress from the economy to education, to global warming, and the Iraq War. One presenter went beyond the topics regularly grabbing headlines and addressed the theme abstractly, suggesting that the number one priority should be to restore the people’s control over themselves, enabling them to follow their consciences and values instead of doing what they’re told.
Pandula Kohilawatta placed first in the competition for day students with Melissa Postway earning the runner-up spot. Finalists in the Speech Challenge for evening students were Cynthia Morton in first place and Sheila Purce in second place. The presentations were judged by faculty members Marlen Haney, Shirley Turner, Susan Meindl, Richard Sykes, and Jon Remy.
