A Hospitable Field Trip

Dayton pharmacy tech students got a firsthand look at a functioning hospital pharmacy on February 6th. They participated in a three-hour field trip to Springfield Community Mercy Hospital where they were given a tour of the pharmacy and allowed to prepare some IV’s. They saw the 2 types of IV prep hoods and noted the differences between the regular IV hood versus the chemo preparation IV hood. They observed the McKesson Robot that can pull up to 500 medications an hour. The pharmacist talked with them and answered their various questions. They also got a tour of the Heart Cath Lab and went with a hospital tech while she did a Pyxis run showing students how they control prescription inventory using a highly monitored system.
All this tied in with their course work for the Pharmacy Law and Practices class. Student Amber Green thought the field trip was very interesting, “It really helped me to see what the actual workings of a hospital are. It’s one thing to read it in our text books and another to physically see it. This was one of my best experiences to date at National.” She is now excited to begin her externship.
