The students, faculty, and staff of the Dayton Area Campus welcomed members of the community on Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, to dedicate their new veterans memorial and 80' U.S. flag pole.
Campus Director Larry Schankin (pictured at the podium on the right and below on the left) welcomed dignitaries from local government, business, and civic organizations to the Campus and led in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Mr. Jim Stone sang a stirring rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner," and later led the crowd in singing "God Bless America." Mayor of the City of Kettering (where the campus is located) Don Patterson (pictured below on the right), gave a brief history of Veterans Day, and cited some facts about the American veteran community that helped bring home the importance of this special day.
He then presented the college with a proclamation declaring the day "National College Veterans Memorial Dedication Day" in the City of Kettering. Also present from the City of Kettering were council members Tony Klepacz and Frank Spolrich, as well as City Manager Mark Schwieterman.
Individual veterans from among the students, faculty, and staff were then called forward and presented with a small gift from the college in recognition for their military service. The ceremony was closed with a prayer led by Robert Abadie, business department chair for the Campus, and the playing of "Taps" by Cheryl Holtz, Centerville Civic Band President. Everyone then gathered in the student lounge for cake, with the many veterans present reminiscing about family, friends, and especially their days as members of the armed forces!
