Cleveland Area Campus Salutes Local Troops & Families at Grand Opening

The Cleveland Area Campus held its grand opening celebration on Wednesday, June 23, with a ceremony and ribbon cutting in front of approximately 100 invited guests, community members, students and staff. In addition to a beautiful rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner by student Chari Makupson, a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance led by student Cora Brown, and a keynote address by Willoughby Hills Mayor Robert Weger, the campus, represented by Community Resource Coordinator Barry Benedict, made a presentation of $500 from the college’s Community Relations Fund to the Family Readiness Group for the 112th Engineer Battalion.
Campus Director Reed Kimball welcomed the guests and recognized local elected officials and community leaders including David Fiebig and David Reichelt of the Willoughby Hills City Council; Ernie Brass of the Lake County Development Corporation; Dale Fellows of the Westlake Chamber of Commerce; Larry O'Connell of the Willoughby Hills Veteran's Memorial Committee; and special guests Pamela Mohn of Family Readiness Group, FSC, 112th Engineer Battaliton, and Captain Timothy Murdy of 112th Engineer Battalion. The Ohio National Guardsmen, most of whom are from the local community, are deploying this summer for a year-long tour of duty in Afghanistan.
“We wish them a safe journey and to come home to their loved ones at the conclusion of their tour. Our prayers are with them and to all who serve,” said Campus Director Reed Kimball. “We cannot change the separation nor take away the pain of leaving. We can be here for their dependents and for their Family Support Group for whatever support or assistance that we can provide.”
It was an excellent opportunity for the students, faculty, and staff of the new campus to welcome the community and showcase their new learning environment, as well as a chance to show support for our local National Guard soldiers and their families.
