Computer Boot Camp

Cincinnati Campus Information Technology Director Jim Cunningham needed a solution to boost the skill level of students in the IT programs. He created the “Computer Boot Camp” with the cooperation of Dave Grosheim from Technology Assisting People in Need (TAPIN) (www.tapin.org). For three Saturdays, from 9:00 am to noon, students disassembled computers, tested them for defects, and installed various software such as the Windows XP Pro and Windows Server 2003 operating systems. The participating students were surprised when graduates Will Rom and Joe Byrd stopped by the Boot Camp to discuss the fears they had during their first term. Will and Joe also discussed survival skills for getting and keeping a job. The Computer Boot Camp was such a success, it will be repeated each term in Cincinnati and may be adopted by other campuses.
