A Path to a Better Future

Marie Patterson (pictured) graduated from the Bluefield Campus with an associate degree in the medical assisting program in August 2005 and was the very first member of her family to receive a college degree. She is now using her new skills as a medical assistant in a medical office with Dr. Teresa Frazer, a pediatric endocrinologist in Bluefield.
Marie decided to go to college because of her children. She knew that college would prepare her for a better job with better pay, benefits, and would ultimately set her on a path to a better future for all of them. She chose National College because the medical assisting program appealed to her; employment in the field would be rewarding, and it would give her a chance to help others.
Marie will be traveling with Dr. Frazer to Chicago, Illinois to participate in a study to help identify child abuse by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Dr. Frazer’s office was the only office chosen to participate from the state of West Virginia.
Marie enjoys her job in the medical field and has set a new goal: to become a nurse. She is planning to enroll in a nearby nursing program and looks forward to continuing to grow in her field.
