A Rewarding Experience

Dave Simmons decided to go back to school so he could continue advancing his career in the electrical services field at Varney, Inc. In 2006, he was elevated from electrician foreman to field manager for the company’s service department and aspires to move up with the help of a degree from National College.

While raising a family and working a demanding job, Dave is nearing the end of his program and has maintained a cumulative grade point average above 3.5. He said, “National’s schedule gives you an opportunity to receive an education and still work a full time job and raise a family.”

With a high grade point average, Dave recently earned the Joseph E. Hurn Academic Performance Scholarship. To be eligible for this award, students have to have successfully completed 48 credit hours, be attending full time, and have a grade point average of 3.0 or better.

“The Hurn Scholarship feels like a reward for all of the hard work that my family and I put into my education.” Dave pointed out that the scholarship also helps his employer, Varney, who is offering him tuition assistance.

Dave said that the things he has learned in his program so far have helped “immensely” on the job. “The instructors are well trained in the fields that they are teaching and they make sure that the students understand what the course is about.” Upon earning an associate degree, Dave plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in business administration at National.
