"I Can Do It!"

mimmsLeann Mimms, a November 2007 graduate and medical assistant for Gold Skin Care in Nashville, comes from a family with several medical professionals, including an aunt who is a registered nurse and a cousin who is a physician assistant. So it’s no surprise that after high school, she set her sights on a medical career. She came to National College in January of 2006, and immediately caught the attention of her instructors and the campus staff because of her hard work and focus in the classroom. For her part, she credits Director of Healthcare Education A’Donni Samuels for being one of her best instructors. “I love him to death…he’s a really good instructor,” she says. “He looks for the best from each of his students.”

I can do it!

In her final term, she completed an externship at Gold Skin Care, a large dermatology practice with 40-50 employees. While Leann was fascinated with the variety of procedures performed at the clinic–everything from removals of cysts and moles to hair loss treatment–she was a bit intimidated. But just as she had at National, she quickly won over her employer and co-workers, and at the end of her externship she was offered a job, less than two weeks after her final classes.

Planning to take her certification this summer, Leann is confident that she’ll do well. In the meantime, she is already planning out her future path: becoming a pediatrician. “It takes a lot of hard work and a lot of study, but I can do it.”
