Woman President!

Hillary didn’t win the nomination, but that’s OK with the Lexington Campus because they have their very own “president”–twice over–in associate degree graduate and current bachelor’s student Dana Millan, who serves as president of both the campus’s Phi Beta Lambda and student Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) organizations.
“Phi Beta Lambda is the collegiate version of Future Business Leaders of America that they have in high school,” Dana explained in a recent conversation with the National News. “It is both state and nationally recognized…we basically focus on the development of business minds.” The campus organization is very active in planning trips as well as organizing speakers on a variety of business topics.
"It was an amazing experience."
The SHRM organization complements PBL, with a focus on human resources. “The Bluegrass Chapter of SHRM has taken us under their wing, so to speak…they always invite us to any events or activities that they have going on,” said Dana. Dana also helps coordinate workshops and speakers on campus to benefit students who are interested in the human resources field. “Every time we’ve had them come to the school we’ve had a pretty good turnout,” she adds. “It’s really a good group of people…they really give us some good information.”
Dana came to National in the summer of 2006, drawn by the campus’s convenience for working adults. Not long after she started her program, Dana began working as an office manager for House Doctors, a “professional handyman” and home improvement business. “I take most all of the phone calls, schedule estimates, schedule appointments,” Dana recited. “I do probably 90% of the accounting; we have an outside company that does our payroll for us and we’ve got an accountant we pull in once in a while to help us with year-end closing.”
It’s her eventual goal of owning her own business that drives Dana’s educational pursuits. Her experience with House Doctors has shown her the importance of accounting in the business world. “Right after I started here, I took the computerized accounting class, and I learned things about Peachtree that I didn’t know before,” Dana said. “So it’s really, really helped me out here, because that’s the program we use.” She’s now enrolled in the bachelor’s degree program in accounting and looking to expand her accounting skills even further.
"I have to say honestly, that… I learned something from every class."
“I have to say honestly, that…I learned something from every class,” she said. When one of the owners comes to her for her opinion, or gives her a business task to accomplish, her coursework really helps. “When I actually start thinking about it, if it wasn’t for some of my classes, I wouldn’t have the slightest idea where to start,” she admitted.
While Dana had praise for all of her courses and instructors, when pressed for a favorite, she settled on one: Small Business Management. “I think I liked it the most because we actually had to create our own business in the class and develop a business plan for it, and it was just a really huge challenge,” she said. “It was an amazing experience
