She's Not Done

Just a few years ago, Christa McGhee was working at a warehouse, the kind of work she’d done all her life.

“It wasn’t offering any benefits and was temporary,” she says. It was far from her dream job: “I always wanted to work in a hospital, in health care.” After the warehouse failed to live up to assurances that she would become a full-time employee with benefits after one year, she decided it was time for a change.

It just so happened that she had two cousins who, at the time, were students at National’s Nashville Campus. She was talking to them one day, and they told her about the medical assisting program at National. Next thing she knew, she was enrolled as a student. When the Madison Campus opened in 2006, she transferred there as it was closer to her home. She graduated with her associate degree in May of 2008, and was immediately offered a job at her externship site.

I’m not going to stop here. I’m going to further my career.

Medical assisting was just what she wanted out of a career, and thanks to National College, a world of opportunity has been opened for her. “It’s what I always wanted to do,” she explains. “I feel like I accomplished what I went back to school for.” Now employed at a busy family practice, she’s happy for now, but has plans to continue her education.

“I’m not done,” she says, quietly but resolutely. “I’m not going to stop here. I’m going to further my career.”
