Second Chance at Life

Cynthia Adams is a medical assisting student at the Roanoke Valley Campus and has never been so enthusiastic about getting an education until she became a National student.

“I feel like I have a second chance at life.”

Cynthia currently works full-time as a medical technician for Austin Residential Support Services (ARSS). She became interested in the medical assisting program when she saw an ad in the newspaper and decided she wanted to do something more in the medical field. She quickly got in contact with Admissions Representative David Tofano and “the rest is history.” She was even approved for financial aid on the same day! “I really feel like I was in the right place at the right time because everything just fell into place for me to go back to school.”

Cynthia is happy with her decision to enroll for many reasons. She said she is pleased with the great support from the College’s staff. She feels like she fits right in with the school’s diverse atmosphere. And since she is juggling a full-time job, a work-study position, and her course work, the College has been flexible to accommodate her busy life.

She is so pleased with her National experience that she agreed to be an ambassador for the College. She recently participated in a student testimonial for a National promotional video and caught the eye of Robyn Vaughn, video director from VPS Studios, a local video production company. Robyn thought Cynthia had a lot of acting potential and asked if she would be interested in working as an actress in commercials. Her reply was simple: “Sure!”

Cynthia got her first acting gig on Monday, August 25th as a wife of a disgruntled husband in an Advance Auto Parts commercial. The video shoot lasted four hours and has led to the promise of future assignments, including one in the near future for a Roanoke Valley calendar. She doesn’t have prior acting or on camera experience, other than doing high school plays and modeling in fashion shows in high school. “It was a good experience…I felt like a professional actress, and I am really looking forward to future assignments. Thanks, National College, for making this possible for me.”

Thanks, National College, for making this possible for me.

After she gets a medical assisting associate degree in August of next year, she is planning to continue her education for a bachelor’s degree in the College’s new health care management program. She would like to someday work on the administrative side of health care, possibly for a local assisted living facility. “With my experience as a medical technician and my medical assisting degree, I will have the skills to work closely with the patients and with my bachelor’s degree, I will also be able to work behind the scenes in administration.”

She is one of three medical assisting students that went to the Virginia Society of Medical Assistants spring convention and won first place as a team in a medical terminology competition.
